Tales of a Grandson is an interactive storytelling performance which has been carefully adapted for care homes and day care settings. Tales is told by Andy Cannon, one of Scotland’s finest storytellers, accompanied by composer and musician Wendy Weatherby.
This special adaptation of Tales of a Grandson helps care homes and day care centres to provide creative activity within care homes that contributes positively to participants physical and mental health and well-being and stimulate participants creative thinking, memory and concentration through participating in storytelling and music activities.
The performance includes set and props designed to stimulate memories and have fun with ‘Scottishness’ including the People’s Friend magazine, printed tea towels and wooden clothes pegs and includes opportunities to dance, sing, reminisce & share stories with the performers.
In October 2016 the show toured successfully to twelve care homes, day care centres and elderly groups in Edinburgh, performing to over 250 people as a key part of Luminate (Scotland’s Creative Ageing Festival). The care home tour was supported by the Edinburgh Festival Theatre’s Forget me Not Project, funded by The Life Changes Trust.
Feedback – October 2016 Care Home Tour
“After the performance our residents were happy and in good humour. People identified with a lot of what was said in terms of reminiscence. The props were helpful in identifying the space and being very visual for those who find the pace of language hard to follow. The songs and humour went down well.”
Nurse, Laverock House Care Home
“it’s so nice to be able to offer something a bit different to our residents who can’t easily get out and about. It makes such a difference and is much appreciated!” Activities Coordinator, Glencairn Care Home
“You have brightened up our day. The performance was wonderful & I wanted to get up and dance.” Resident, Edinburgh care home
The feedback from this tour was overwhelmingly positive with high value being placed on this type of quality work being taken to homes and groups. The company is now set to embark on a tour of care homes and day care centres in Perth in Kinross in partnership withPerth & Kinross Health & Social Care Partnership, the Care Home Activity Network (CHAN), Perth Theatre, funded by Lottery Awards for All.
